PoE2 Gnawed, Preserved, Ancient Bone: Which to Use
PoE2 desecration bones come in three slots (Jawbone, Rib, Collarbone) and three grades (Gnawed, Preserved, Ancient). On Ribs, the ones we checked, a Gnawed Rib only works on items up to Item Level 64, a Preserved Rib has no restriction, and an Ancient Rib adds "Minimum Modifier Level 40".

Actually, on Item Level 82 Intelligence gloves, the priciest Ancient bone's restriction didn't remove a single Desecrated mod.

Each Slot Has Its Own Bone
Bones don't work on every item. Each slot has its own bone.

Can I use any bone on any item?

No. The description says what each bone works on. Here's a table.

There's one more, the Altered Collarbone. Its description adds a "chance for otherworldly modifiers".

Has ExileDesk ever used the wrong bone for a slot?

It has. Talismans were treated as armour, so faction omens didn't work on them.

v0.1.508 fixed that and gave talismans Jawbones. The same version stopped offering bones for sceptres with no Desecrated mods.
Gnawed vs Preserved vs Ancient: Only the Level Limits Differ
Within a slot, all three grades simply "desecrate". The only difference is a level restriction.

Does a higher grade make the effect stronger?

Every description just says "desecrate". Only the level restriction differs. Let's line up the Ribs.

Both poe2db and Craft of Exile show the same "Minimum Modifier Level 40".
Does the Ancient Bone's Minimum Modifier Level 40 Remove Desecrated Mods?
Not on Intelligence gloves. None of their Desecrated mods fall below the level 40 floor.

A floor of 40 cuts the weak Desecrated mods, so it's a win!

On Intelligence gloves, nothing gets cut. There are 15 Desecrated mods, and every one is modifier level 65 with a single tier.

Isn't that different from Greater and Perfect orbs?

Greater and Perfect orbs use a minimum modifier level to cut low tiers. Glove Desecrated mods have no low tiers, so there's nothing to cut.

So an Ancient bone rolls exactly the same mods?

That's a separate question. Neither poe2db nor Craft of Exile says whether the grade changes the mods or their odds.

- Whether the bone grade changes the Desecrated mod pool or its odds is unconfirmed (neither poe2db nor Craft of Exile lists it).
- We only checked the level limits on Ribs (Intelligence gloves). The sources here don't confirm that Jawbones and Collarbones of the same grade have the same limits.
- The Gnawed Rib's Item Level 64 cap was confirmed in Craft of Exile's hover. Our research notes disagree on whether poe2db's bone page states it, so this post relies on Craft of Exile.
How Much Do Bones Cost?
Both price sources agree on one thing: Ancient bones are far more expensive than the rest.

The direction of poe2db's rates is our reading of its notation, so it's an estimate. Thinly traded items are a weak guide, so be careful.
How ExileDesk Handles Bone Grades
The emulator's rules for bones were settled over a few versions.

An Essence of the Abyss adds it. Only then does the tier floor become item level × 0.4.

When I use a bone, does it land on a prefix or a suffix?

That's a separate rule from the grade. It's covered in Desecration and Omen of Necromancy: Which Side?.
Bones split into three slots and three grades, and the grades differ only in level limits. On Item Level 65+ gear, a Preserved bone is usually enough.
